UNIPORT ASUU gets new leadership as Chima hands over
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) branch, has inaugurated a new Executive Committee (EXCO) with Professor O.O. Ngwoke emerging as the new Branch Chairperson.
The transition follows a successful and peaceful election held on June 5, 2025. After the election, the outgoing Chairperson, Professor Uzoma Chima, formally handed over leadership to Professor Ngwoke.
In his remarks, Professor Chima expressed gratitude to God and the union for the opportunity to serve over the past four years.
He reflected on his tenure, highlighting key struggles, including efforts to address unpaid promotion arrears and poor working conditions for academic staff.
The new EXCO, under Professor Ngwoke’s leadership, is expected to build upon the achievements of the outgoing administration by continuing the push for improved staff welfare and addressing persistent institutional challenges.
ASUU-UNIPORT has remained vocal on critical issues affecting both staff and students, including recent disputes with the university management that led to the withholding of students’ results.
The peaceful transition and inauguration of the new leadership mark a new chapter for the union, with renewed commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of academic staff at UNIPORT.
