Uncovering the unexpected at LI's first Uncharted store - Newsday

“It smells so good,” said Ruby Ganci as she ripped open Touchland’s $10 “wild watermelon” hand sanitizer and sprayed herself on the sidewalk outside Uncharted in Greenvale. The bacteria-busting mist — packaged to resemble a cell phone-like device and sold inside a sleek see-through pouch — is uber-popular among teens and tweens, so it was a real score for the 9-year-old, who recently went to the store with her mother, Lindsay, to browse.

It’s one of the latest crazes Uncharted’s president said he hopes shoppers will come through their doors to unearth, whether in the boldly labeled aisles for home; fashion; jewelry; bath and body; men’s and outdoors; and “brands we love,” or on tabletop displays scattered throughout the 10,782-square-foot floor marked as “New & Trending.” More merchandising messages set the tone at Uncharted’s only Long Island’s store, especially on the storefront. “Welcome to your happy place,” decaled letters on one window announce as shoppers walk in. In the next window, a sign asks those entering to, “Shop, smile, and bring the happiness home,” followed in the next window with this advice: “Discover a few of your new favorite things.”

Some of those might be from labels such as Birkenstock, Vineyard Vines, Free People, the Little Words Project, Bombas, Owala, Uggs, MacKenzie-Childs, Kendra Scott, Tree Hut, Stanley or Loops. “This is dangerous,” said one young woman to strangers around her as she lingered at the bracelet and necklace display for another popular brand, Pura Vida. “I love Pura Vida,” she then said to no one as she eyed the jewelry intensely.

Uncharted opened on Long Island in March, and is one of only four stores across the country (the others are in Illinois). Shopping-savvy Long Islanders might recognize its similarity to The Paper Store, which has six locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. It’s owned by the same company. Uncharted stores, according to an email from Jackson Giammattei, a company spokeswoman, tend to be larger and feature a curated selection of lifestyle brands across categories.

“We've got an incredible buying team, and they do a fantastic job of being ahead of the curve for what is going to be hot, and we make sure that we have it in our stores,” said Tom Anderson, 46, Uncharted president.

At this very moment — among other sweet treats like Swedish candy — that includes Dubai chocolate, which got famous on TikTok, he said. Uncharted staffers purchased samples from 100 manufacturers and did a taste test before choosing to exclusively sell the pistachio, chocolate and dough delicacy from The Nuts Factory, a New York City-based company, he said.

“Another thing that is really trending in the world right now is beauty and self-care,” said Anderson, pointing out that the store is responding with products from Marin (skin care), Supergoop (sunscreen) and Loops (facial masks).

In between, the store’s shelves offer surprises, such as the gnome-like Beardy Dish Brush, ceramic car coasters featuring a dog on a skateboard and the words “Going Places,” and anthropomorphic plush Emotional Support Pals chicken nuggets (one is wearing sunglasses).

Anderson, whose father, Bob, started The Paper Store out of a Massachusetts newsstand in the 1960s, said that Long Islanders should expect the shop to evolve as much as the rotation of merchandise.

In the jewelry section, there’s now an ear-piercing station, which no one was using during a recent visit. The lineup could soon include a play area for children, a phone-charging station with seating, and a dispenser for water of all kinds and flavors, he said.

Plans are also in the works for special events, he said, including influencer appearances, fashion shows and heat press gatherings.

For Olivia Fortich, 26, Uncharted has been her go-to place for finding gifts. The Glen Head teacher  said she recently purchased a bracelet, prayer box and angel statue for her grandmother, but she’s also bought candy and a board game for her sister.

“I love it for everyone,” she said.

Jacqueline Fiorello, 59, a mental health administrator who lives in Oceanside, described her recent visit as “mental therapy.” She said she wanted “everything” she saw at the store.

“I loved it,” she said of the store.

But, she added of the wares she saw, “Do I need it? No.”

“But I want it.”
