Uhuru mourns ex-Zambian President Edgar Lungu

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended his condolences to the people of Zambia following the passing of former President Edgar Lungu.

Uhuru described Lungu as a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith in his tribute.

“President Lungu was not only a distinguished statesman who served his country with dedication and honour but also a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith,” Uhuru said in a statement on X.

He also noted that Lungu was committed to the prosperity and unity of Zambia in his leadership, and he will be remembered for that.

“His commitment to the prosperity and unity of Zambia was evident throughout his presidency, and his calm, measured leadership will be remembered by all who knew and worked with him,” Uhuru said.

He further stated that he is not just mourning him as a former president but also as a trusted friend with whom they shared a lot together.

“I mourn a trusted friend and fondly recall his visits to Kenya and the moments we shared discussing the future of our continent, the role of youth, and the importance of building bridges across our nations,” Uhuru said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Mama Esther Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia during this difficult time,” he added.

President Edgar Lungu passed away on Thursday, June,5,2025, at the age of 68.

While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, it is understood that Lungu had been receiving treatment in recent weeks.

The late president held office from 2015 to 2021.

He first assumed leadership following the death of President Michael Sata and went on to win a full term in the 2016 general election.

After losing to President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu stepped away from public life but returned to active politics in 2023, aligning with the opposition.
