Uber Plans to Double India Tech Workforce

Uber plans to double its India tech workforce in the next 3-5 years, recognizing India as a critical development hub. According to Praveen Neppalli Naga, global chief technology officer, mobility and delivery, Uber has experienced rapid expansion in India since establishing its hub in 2014, capitalizing on the high-quality engineering talent available in the country.
Uber's engineering team in India currently employs 2,200 individuals across engineering, data science, design, and product functions. This is double the number of employees compared to three years ago. Naga stated that Uber aims to maintain a similar growth rate and double its workforce in the next 3-5 years, although specific numbers were not disclosed.
Naga emphasized that global technology companies face a shortage of talent to build products and services. However, he believes that AI can overcome this limitation, allowing companies to build everything needed, with the only constraint being the availability of innovative ideas. Uber is also considering developing its own AI model, leveraging its proprietary data to build pricing and matching algorithms, and to enhance delivery and personalization for the future. However, Naga stressed the importance of addressing privacy concerns in this endeavor.
