Two-storey building collapses in Lagos, no casualties reported
A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday during the decking stage at Craig Street in the Shomolu area of Lagos.
Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries, as workers on-site managed to escape before the structure gave way.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that the collapsed building was one of two under construction at the location.
The incident also affected the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Liberty Parish at No. 5 Craig Street. The building’s pillars fell on the church, causing partial damage. Worshippers present at the time escaped unhurt.
LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team and other emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene. A thorough search was conducted to ensure no one was trapped, and the area has been cordoned off to prevent unauthorised access. Public awareness campaigns were also carried out to warn residents against approaching the site.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation.
Responding agencies included LASEMA, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
