'Top Gun: Maverick' Star Miles Teller Offers Disappointing Sequel Update

Published 1 month ago3 minute read

Top Gun: Maverick star. The actor who played Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick mentioned that he requested Tom Cruise let him know ahead of time about a potential sequel so he could get in shape. However, Teller didn't exactly confirm Top Gun 3 had received the "cleared for takeoff" sign.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Teller appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, where he spoke about his latest film, Scott Derrickson's Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller The Gorge. Colbert didn’t wait long to change subjects, and as the host said, he was "professionally obligated" to ask the actor about Top Gun 3. :

"Look, you might be shocked, but I do not green-light that thing. I have nothing to do [with it].

I just told Tom [Cruise], I said, 'give me enough time’'[and a] heads up for me to get in shape. It's one month per ab. I need six months heads up."

Colbert kept pushing for a response and asked Teller if he was confirming that the sequel to Top Gun: Maverick was happening. However, Teller was quick to reply with the following: "I don't know. There's a lot of enthusiasm on the fans' side. There's a lot of enthusiasm on the creative side." The late-night show host also asked the actor if he performed his own stunts like his former co-star, Tom Cruise. Teller replied that he did as many as he could, before jokingly responding that he did "most of all of them."

One year ago, we reported that Paramount Pictures was working on a sequel to the 2022 blockbuster starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris, among others. Joseph Kosinski was set to reprise his role as director, and Ehren Kruger was going to take care of the script. But after months of teasing, Top Gun 3 remains a mystery. Although Teller didn’t say "no" about his participation in the sequel, his comments mean that whatever is coming, is going to take longer than expected. The jet fighters are seemingly still being refueled.

Paramount Pictures took 36 years to make a sequel to the 1986 action film that put Tom Cruise in the spotlight. Talks about a sequel began in 2010, but after original Top Gun director Tony Scott passed away, the future of the sequel became a bit uncertain. It was only after Tom Cruise expressed his uttermost interest that Top Gun: Maverick became a reality.

We're not saying Top Gun 3 will take 36 years, but given Cruise's involvement, the sequel will probably be ready to start shooting on his schedule. While he doesn't write or direct his movies, his usual role as a producer gives him enough power to make the decisions. Cruise is currently in the post-production process of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Then he will have a major role in the still untitled project by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Will Top Gun 3 be next? We will have to wait for more updates, but if you see Teller getting in Naval pilot shape, it could mean the jets are ready for takeoff.
