Tom Cruise Says This MCU Star Is the Next Big "Movie Star"

Published 13 hours ago3 minute read

isn't just The Last Samurai, he's also said to be the last movie star by a lot of film fans. The actor, who is about to bring the Mission: Impossible franchise to a close with the upcoming release of The Final Reckoning, recently addressed his status as the last movie star who can sell a film on their name alone. Cruise felt bittersweet about the label, but also gave fans hope for cinema's future by naming the actor who would take over the unofficial mantle.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise was asked about his status as "the last great movie star." The actor laughed off the unofficial title as the reporter said it, before giving a very on-brand answer. While everyone else would feel immensely proud of holding such a title, Tom Cruise said it's the last thing he wants, as there are so many amazing actors still working and coming up. "I don’t want to be," Cruise began. "There’s so many other talented actors out there, and I want to see them crush it."

'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' won't be the first time Cruise has competed with a certain adorable little Disney guy at the box office.

Tom Cruise was then asked about Michael B. Jordan's surprise appearance at the London premiere of The Final Reckoning. Cruise gave Jordan and director Ryan Coogler high praise for their newest movie, Sinners, teasing that Michael B. Jordan will be the next big thing in Hollywood (if he isn't already). "I’m a huge fan of his," Cruise said. "That film, Sinners, is amazing. We’re going to make a movie together." Unfortunately, the pair aren't confirmed to be working on any projects together yet. But given their intense fandom and respect for each other, it is almost a given.

Over the past few years, the summer movie season has been somewhat underwhelming. 2024 was perhaps the most egregious example, with major blockbusters, franchise entries, and remakes flopping with critics and audiences. But, Cruise feels that cinema is healing, as this summer has a packed slate of exciting projects.

"It’s going to be a great summer of movies," the actor declared. "We got the John Wick series with Keanu [Reeves] and Ana [de Armas]. You got Brad [Pitt] with F1. I’m looking forward to going and everybody having a good summer." Ballerina and F1 aren't the only exciting movies releasing this summer. Nobody 2, Freakier Friday, Happy Gilmore 2, Fantastic Four: First Steps, Superman, The Old Guard 2, Jurassic World Rebirth, The Phoenician Scheme, 28 Years Later, and so many more great movies are in store for film fans this upcoming season.

Tom Cruise is currently doing the press rounds for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. The film made its world premiere at Cannes last week, before it releases in theaters on May 21.
