Tokyo Strengthens Position as Fashion Powerhouse with Rising Designers Selected for Paris-Linked Awards
Tokyo, April 7, 2025 - The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is intensifying its efforts to establish Tokyo as a premier global fashion hub, rivalling Paris, Milan, New York, and London. Key initiatives are underway, highlighted by the recent culmination of two significant fashion competitions: the Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2025 (NFDT) and the Sustainable Fashion Design Award 2025 (SFDA). The final judging took place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, showcasing emerging designers' creativity and potential through a fashion show format.
Next Fashion Designer of Tokyo 2025 (NFDT)
NFDT2025 aims to identify and cultivate young designers residing or studying in Tokyo, providing them with a platform to achieve international success. The competition focuses on nurturing talent and offering opportunities for growth on a global scale.
Sustainable Fashion Design Award 2025 (SFDA)
SFDA2025 seeks to introduce innovative fashion pieces that reimagine traditional Japanese materials, such as kimono fabrics, for a global audience. The competition emphasizes sustainability and the creative use of traditional resources in contemporary designs.
Judging Panels
Both competitions featured judging panels comprised of prominent figures in the fashion industry. The NFDT panel included Kunihiko Morinaga, designer of ANREALAGE and a regular at Paris Fashion Week, and Yusuke Takahashi, Creative Director of CFCL, along with six other leading industry experts. The SFDA panel featured Norbert Leuret, President of LVMH Japan, and Hideaki Shikama, designer of Children of the discordance and a regular at Milan Fashion Week, alongside six additional distinguished experts.
Award Recipients and Support
In total, 16 exceptional works were selected across both competitions, receiving top honors in various categories. The 16 winning designers will receive support ranging from brand development guidance to opportunities for international showcase, including potential participation in Paris Fashion Week.
