President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday for Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to attend the eighth-day prayer for the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, who died recently at the age of 91

The prayer, which is a significant Islamic rite, will be held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The rite will attract dignitaries from across Nigeria including Governor Dapo Abiodun and other top political, business, religious and traditional leaders.

Oba Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, was buried a day after his death according to Islamic customs, ending a remarkable 65-year reign known for progressive leadership, advocacy for good governance and transformation of Ijebuland.

The late monarch had been a strong national figure and a respected voice in traditional and political spheres.

He was also known for his support of education and institutional development in Ogun and beyond.

President Tinubu, who had a close personal relationship with the late Awujale, had conferred the national honour of commander of the order of the Niger (CON) on him during his 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary in 2024.

In his presidential campaign journey, Tinubu began his consultations with Oba Adetona and after his election victory, returned to the Awujale’s palace to express appreciation.

Ahead of Sunday’s prayer, security has been heightened in Ijebu-Ode.

Streets around the stadium, the Awujale’s palace and his Igbeba residence are under heavy surveillance by the police, Nigerian Army, Civil Defence Corps and Amotekun Corps to ensure orderliness during the event.

Major markets in the city such as Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu and Oke-Aje are expected to shut down to honour the late monarch, giving residents the opportunity to pay their final respects.

Locals in Ijebu-Ode have continued to express admiration for the late Oba’s impact, hailing him as a leader who brought dignity, progress and national relevance to Ijebuland.

“Our baba brought development and dignity to Ijebu community. We pray Allah forgives his sins and grants him Al-jannah Firdaus,” said Yusuf Balogun, a local cab driver.

“The President’s visit is a great honour to us. It shows the impact our Oba made on Nigeria.”

Petty traders and hotel operators in the area have also begun to witness a surge in business as visitors pour into the city.

Damilola Ogunsanwo, a trader near the stadium, said demand for food, drinks and accommodation has increased significantly.

“Visitors have started arriving. We are selling more than usual,” she said.

Oba Adetona is remembered as a monarch who modernised the traditional institution, championed education and upheld justice and accountability.
