Fans of The Little House on the Prairie will be happy to know that the new Netflix reboot is currently in production.
TV Insider reported that filming for the new series, based on 's semi-biographical books, started on June 10 in Canada. According to the publication, the series will star as Laura Ingalls, as Charles Ingalls, as Caroline Ingalls, and as Mary Ingalls. In addition, has been cast as John Edwards and will play Dr. George Tamm. will portray Mitchell, will play White Sun, has been cast as the character, Good Eagle, and will portray Little Puma, as reported by TV Insider.
Alison Arngrim, who portrayed Laura Ingalls' () rival Nellie Oleson in the original television series, which aired from 1974 to 1983, spoke about the upcoming Netflix series during a February 2025 interview with ReMind Magazine. According to Arngrim, the new show will not be too similar to the original series. Instead, the upcoming Netflix project will follow the plots from Wilder's book series.
“It’s not really like a reboot, they’re not going back to Walnut Grove. They’re not going to have Doc Baker and Miss Beadle, and they’re certainly not going to have Al Burton and all the people who were made up for the show," said Arngrim during the interview. "It’s going back to the books. As strange as it may sound, Laura Ingalls’ books and Little House on the Prairie may be one of those things that is eternal and it’s just going to keep happening. It’s kind of like you have the multiverse, the superhero multiverse. … This is like that. This is part of the Laura Ingalls Wilder multiverse.”
Arngrim shared her thoughts about the long-lasting popularity of the Little House on the Prairie television series during a March 2024 interview with Good Morning America, alongside Gilbert and , who played Caroline Ingalls. According to Arngrim, the show's actors did not expect the series to have such a dedicated fanbase.
"When we did the show, we were like, 'Yeah this is really good show. It seems to be a hit. That's nice.' But the idea that 50 years later that people would still be this excited about it is absolutely mind-blowing," said Arngrim.
