The Fantastic Four: First Steps Beats Superman on 10 Most Anticipated Summer Movies List (But Falls Short of No. 1)

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

2025 is once again treating superhero fans to a lot of new entries, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman. However, even with several additions to the Top 10 for most anticipated films of the summer, the superhero genre failed to snatch the first spot, which is claimed by a longtime hit franchise.

2024 was a relatively slow year for superhero movies, with only Deadpool & Wolverine coming out from Marvel Studios. This year, things will be different, as the MCU has three films on its slate, with Captain America: Brave New World already out, and DC Universe joining the conversation with Superman. Fandango has just released the Top 10 Most Anticipated Movies of the summer based on a new study, and the top spot didn't go to a superhero movie, but an all-time favorite: the new Jurassic World Rebirth.

Per the outlet, The Fantastic Four: First Steps seems to have gained more hype than James Gunn's Superman. The two superhero films were in second and fourth place, respectively, followed by MCU's Thunderbolts* in fifth place.

The Top 10 Most Anticipated Summer Movies, per Fandango, were:

Looking at the top, Disney is set to have a new exciting year, with four out of the 10 titles. In 2024, the House of Mouse was the only studio to gross $5 billion globally and the first one to do so since 2019. Universal Pictures will have a decent year, too, with Jurassic World Rebirth in first place, as well as How to Train Your Dragon.

DC's Superman Reboot Could Reportedly Decide Warner Bros' Future

Warner Bros. may be on the verge of a major shakeup, with its future reportedly hinging on James Gunn's anticipated Superman remake.

The new Jurassic movie is the seventh installment in the franchise and the fourth Jurassic World film. However, it's also the third time the franchise is completely rebooted, as the new film will feature a different cast than the previous Chris Pratt-led films. The new entry in the sci-fi monster action franchise features Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey in the leading roles, as well as Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Ed Skrein.

Fandango did a deep dive into the moviegoers' choices for 2024, a year that brought over $8.5 million in revenue at the domestic box office. It focused on understanding what drives moviegoers to the theaters, how audiences learn about movies, and which genders prefer different genres.

The survey, which featured over 5,000 moviegoers, focused on Loyal Moviegoers (who watched five or more movies in theaters in 2024), versus Casual Moviegoers (with four of fewer titles). Looking at some of the biggest titles of 2024, 63% were parents. Social media was the top resource for discovering a new movie release, with 59%, followed closely by TV ads at 54% and movie theaters at 51%. Video content still remained one of the most popular ways to build excitement, with trailers, movie clips, and movie posters and reviews in the first top 3.

Among the loyal moviegoers, they were mostly millennials and Gen X, with males being more likely to see more films, with 70% of them having children. Gen Z made up the casual moviegoers, with women making up the category.
