The EFF is Ready to Revolt Against Budget
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) turned the streets of Tshwane red on Monday as they led what they called a “VAT Victory March.” The party claims its legal intervention in the Western Cape High Court led to the overturning of the previous fiscal framework and revenue proposals. With the third budget expected to be tabled on Wednesday, the EFF is demanding a pro-poor “people’s budget.”
In a memorandum submitted to the National Treasury, the party called for an end to what it termed the “policy capture” of the state by international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
“These demands are non-negotiable. They represent the minimum conditions for a people’s budget and a sovereign developmental state,” the EFF stated.
EFF leader Julius Malema dismissed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent visit to the U.S., claiming it would yield no benefits for South Africa.
Meanwhile, the National Treasury acknowledged receipt of the EFF’s demands, stating it would respond within 30 days.
“This confirms receipt of your submission, as well as an undertaking to submit it to the Minister of Finance,” Treasury said in a statement.
As tensions rise ahead of Wednesday’s budget announcement, the EFF has made it clear: they are prepared to fight for their vision of an economically just South Africa.
