on screen within it. Taissa plays Sister Irene in The Nun films, while Vera is the captain of the Conjuring universe, portraying the legendary Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring series. Fans got a glimpse of hope after the post-credits scene in The Nun II, which hinted at a potential intersection between the two plotlines. However, director Michael Chaves shed light on why it hasn’t happened—and likely never will.

First and foremost, the franchise is known for portraying the real-life experiences of married paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Chaves thought that introducing a direct familial line between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren—which doesn’t actually exist in reality—would blur the line between fact and fiction. The Conjuring heavily relies on marketing itself as “true stories.” Chaves explained that even though the actresses are sisters in real life and share a similar on-screen presence, the creative team chose not to fabricate a connection that could jeopardize the authenticity. Fear factor plays a large role in The Conjuring as it is a horror franchise. When the lines between reality and fiction intertwine, that fear factor diminishes. What makes the franchise the highest-grossing horror series ever is the belief that the stories are real.

However, fans are still hopeful that the two will somehow intertwine in one of the films. Some even speculate that the characters might be linked through reincarnation or bloodline theories, but Chaves and the producers valued narrative integrity over fan wishes. As a result, the two timelines remain as separate as they can be in the Conjuring Universe. The Nun prequels explore Vatican investigations and demonic forces in 1952, while The Conjuring films are heavily based on historical cases investigated by the Warrens from the early ’70s to the late ’90s.

The final installment of the main franchise, The Conjuring: Last Rites, is set to release on September 5, 2025. It will center around the infamous 1986 Smurl haunting. The film is highly anticipated because it is expected to conclude the long-running horror saga. Overall, while the Farmiga sisters belong to the same twisted cinematic universe, the directors have chosen to keep their characters apart to preserve historical accuracy and thematic consistency.
