'Suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo is not above the law' - Prof Gyampo
Prof Ransford Gyampo is the Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority
Acting CEO of Ghana Shippers Authority, Prof Ransford Gyampo, has weighed in on the ongoing legal challenges faced by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, asserting that the law must take its course regardless of her position.
Speaking on TV3's "Key Points" on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Prof Gyampo stated that she must go through laid down procedures rooted in the laws governing the country.
"If she is wrong, the law must act; if she is not, the law must act. Araba is not above the laws of Ghana," he said.
He emphasised that if any untoward actions are established, she must face the consequences.
Meanwhile, Dr Joshua Zebuntie Zaato, a Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, has expressed dismay at the silence of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) regarding Chief Justice Torkornoo's struggles.
He questioned whether their silence implies complicity, suggesting that "history will remember that a Chief Justice fought an 'unfair' process to get her removed, but her own association kept quiet."
Dr Zaato described her legal fight against the removal process as "virtuous".
"She is fighting with honour and integrity, she will go, but history will remember that she fought to the last end," he said.
These reactions come after the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo's injunction application on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
She had sought to halt the proceedings of a six-member presidential committee investigating petitions for her removal from office.
Her application which was filed on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, aimed to restrain the committee, established by President John Mahama, from continuing its inquiry until her substantive case is resolved.
Chief Justice Torkornoo, specifically, requested the disqualification of Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, along with other committee members including Daniel Yao Domelevo, Major Flora Bazuwaaruah Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dziasah, from participating in or presiding over the committee's deliberations.
The Supreme Court's unanimous decision to dismiss the application marks a significant development in the high-profile legal battle surrounding Chief Justice Torkornoo's suspension and the constitutional questions it raises.
The full written ruling from the Supreme Court is anticipated to be released on June 12, 2025.
