Surname last: Gujarat schools to adopt new name format | Ahmedabad News - Times of India
Ahmedabad: Starting from June 2025, the new academic year, schools will record surnames of students at the end of their names in official documents such as the general register (GR) and school leaving certificate (LC) to align with the Aadhaar card format.
The Gujarat state education department has issued a circular in this regard. The change aims to resolve issues faced during the generation of Apaar IDs due to mismatch between the names on Aadhaar cards and school records.Until now, schools in Gujarat wrote the surname first, followed by the student's name and father's name in the GR and LC. However, in documents such as the Aadhaar card, the student's first name appears first and the surname last.
This inconsistency created technical difficulties while mapping student data for the Apaar ID system. The circular, issued by the state project director of Samagra Shiksha, instructs all govt primary and secondary schools to adopt the new format when entering names in GRs and issuing LCs. In the updated format, students' names will be recorded as: first name, father's name and surname. This move is expected to streamline the process of Apaar ID creation, ensure uniformity across key documents and prevent administrative complications during school transfers or govt data verification.
The education department has urged schools to implement change from the upcoming academic session to maintain consistency with national identity documentation standards.
