Superman's Box Office Predicted to Beat Man of Steel, but Not Batman V Superman

As gears up for its theatrical release, early reveal a wide range of potential outcomes for DC Studios’ first reboot under James Gunn. While some estimates suggest a debut that could surpass Man of Steel, others predict a significantly lower domestic below $100 million, depending on audience reception and final marketing momentum.

James Gunn’s Superman is projected to open with $135 million at the U.S. domestic box office, according to the National Research Group (NRG) (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The tracking range provided by NRG spans from $125 million to $145 million. This estimate places Superman above the last solo Superman film, Man of Steel ($116.6 million), but below Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).

However, some studio insiders and distribution sources are reportedly suggesting a more conservative range of $90 million to $125 million. According to Deadline, “First choice for Captain America: Brave New World is higher than Superman’s by 71% at the same point in time.” That film opened with $88.8 million. Additionally, Superman’s first choice percentage is 64% below The Batman ($134 million opening in 2022).

Despite these conservative projections, presales for Superman reportedly outperformed The Fantastic Four: First Steps during their first 24 hours, including advance Amazon Prime Early Access screenings on July 8. According to distribution reports, Superman recorded the highest advance ticket sales of the year within its first 24 hours (via Deadline).

Historical context shows that Superman films have reportedly earned $2.56 billion globally through seven movies. Man of Steel grossed $670 million worldwide, and Batman v Superman reached $874.3 million. If Superman opens at $135 million, it will surpass The Batman ($134 million). It would also beat Suicide Squad ($133.7 million) to become the fourth-highest DC opener not adjusted for inflation.

In an interview with The Rolling Stone, James Gunn stated, “This is the first movie out of DC Studios… I’d be very happy with a double.” He added, “I’ve gotta make my budget back. I’ll be very happy with that”

Superman opens in North America on July 11, 2025.
