STAMFORD, CT — Stamford Health announced that it has received accreditation under the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).

The achievement follows Stamford Health’s recognition as the first site in the nation to be accredited by the NAPBC in 2009, and its subsequent accreditations in 2012, 2015, 2018, and 2021.

This year, NAPBC recognized Stamford Health with the additional honor of Distinction in Surgical Care. In addition, the organization also received accreditation under the American College of Radiology (ACR) with designations as an ACR Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center (CBIC), formerly known as Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE), and a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence (DICOE), at its imaging sites.

Programs accredited by the NAPBC follow a rigorous model for organizing and managing a breast center to facilitate multidisciplinary, integrated, and comprehensive breast cancer services.

Led by Co-Directors Dr. Sarah Cate, FACS, chief of breast surgery, and Dr. Mia Kazanjian, director of women’s imaging, Stamford Health’s Breast Center offers a full suite of breast health services including mammography, ultrasound, MRI, breast biopsy, nurse navigation, a high-risk program, and breast surgery.

As an NAPBC-accredited institution, Stamford Health also becomes an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. The Surgical Quality Partner designation lets patients know Stamford Health is dedicated to quality and relentless self-improvement and has been verified or accredited by the ACS.

"At Stamford Health, we are committed to using the latest advancements in medical technology and following strict guidelines to ensure we exceed NAPBC’s standards," Cate said in a news release. "I’d like to extend my gratitude to our Breast Center team for their dedication to surgical excellence and providing high-quality care to our patients."

An ACR Designated CBIC is a high honor from the American College of Radiology for facilities that seek and earn accreditation in all the ACR breast imaging accreditation programs. In 2024, Darien, Wilton, Greenwich, and Norwalk joined Tully in this designation.

As a DICOE, this excellence in imaging extends to all the radiology services at Stamford Health, including MRI, CT, US, and X-ray. In 2024, Stamford Health became the first imaging center/hospital in Fairfield County to receive the DICOE designation.

"I am incredibly proud of these accreditations which reinforce our focus on high quality radiology and delivering compassionate care in a supportive and healing environment," Kazanjian said in a news release. "I appreciate our team who works hard every day to ensure the best care for patients and look forward to enhancing the privacy and beauty of the space in our upcoming Odyssey Breast Center."

In 2022, Stamford Health received a philanthropic commitment of $10 million from the Odyssey Group Foundation, which will fund the future relocation and total transformation of its Breast Center at the Tully Health Center to the first floor, set to begin later in 2025.
