Sowore Slams Edo NYSC For Extending Corps Members' Service After Protest Over Delayed N77,000 Allowance | Sahara Reporters
The state’s NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Frances Ben-Ushie, extended the service period of over 30 corps members without pay.
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Edo State for punishing corps members with a 90-day service extension after they protested the non-payment of their allowances.
The state’s NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Frances Ben-Ushie, extended the service period of over 30 corps members without pay.
The affected individuals, who were due to complete their mandatory one-year service on March 17, 2025, were instead handed a "Notification of Extension of Service" rather than their official discharge certificates.
The controversy stems from corps members using a WhatsApp group to express frustration while their N77,000 allowance payment was delayed.
Rather than addressing their grievances, the NYSC leadership in Edo State took disciplinary action, effectively penalising them for speaking out.
Sowore, in a post on his X handle, condemned the decision, calling it unacceptable and vowing that it would not stand.
His intervention adds to growing concerns about how the NYSC handles the welfare and dissent of corps members.
"THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND WILL NOT STAND! @officialnyscng.

"The affected corps members, who completed their mandatory one-year service on March 17, 2025, were issued a "Notification of Extension of Service" instead of their NYSC Discharge Certificates.”
"Reports indicate that the extension serves as a penalty for their complaints about the non-payment of their N77,000 allowance, which they had shared in a WhatsApp group," Sowore added.
