Snow showers tonight, coldest air of season lurking

Published 1 month ago4 minute read

Tonight features cloudy skies with scattered snow showers expected. Embedded snow squalls will create visibility problems at times, along with slick roads where squalls set up. Temperatures will dip back into the low 20s with wind gusts occasionally topping 30 mph, which will put wind chill values down into the single digits to around zero periodically during the overnight.

Friday sees our temperatures on the climb as a southerly breeze kicks back in for the afternoon after a cloudy morning with a few lingering snow showers. A good bit of snowmelt can be expected for the end of the work week as temperatures climb toward 40 degrees for the afternoon. Enjoy the afternoon if you’re yearning for sunshine because the weekend will be unsettled across the region.

Saturday begins with light snow, but as temperatures warm up during the mid-morning, we will switch to all rain. Rain showers will be light, with a quarter of an inch of rain expected, but it’s a gloomy day on the way with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 40s. Rain will switch back to snow Saturday night. Though snow totals will be modest through dawn Sunday, a few slick spots will be possible on our roadways.

Sunday sees more snow showers falling throughout the day as our upslope feed returns. Mostly cloudy skies and light to steady snow will persist off and on throughout the day. Colder air also will work into the region as we head into the afternoon, with our high temperatures taking place in the late morning and early afternoon near 30 degrees.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day sees a continuation of our upslope flow, which means colder air and more snow showers. The deep chill might be the bigger story though, as high temperatures fall to their lowest we’ve seen in awhile, as we struggle to even reach the teens! In addition, occasional wind gusts above 25 mph will drop wind chill values well below zero once again.

Tuesday provides plenty of sunshine but we remain chilly with our polar air mass in place so despite the sunshine, it’s another brutally cold day on the way, with highs only reaching the mid teens.

Wednesday keeps the sunshine around with an isolated chance for a few snow showers in our far southern counties with a southern low down across the Gulf Coast. That will create the risk for snow in the Carolinas, but a cold high pressure system will act as a pinball bumper for us, keeping that system down to our south. Our temperatures will be cold with that polar high pressure system around with highs in the mid 20s.

Thursday provides the risk for rain and snow showers with a southern system nearby. Impacts at this point for our region look to be minimal. It’s yet another cold day on the horizon though with highs in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees.

Looking ahead in your extended forecast, no surprise at this point, but temperatures remain below average! A southern system close to our south on Thursday will keep the risk for a couple of flurries, with upslope snow Friday before high pressure moves in Saturday. Temperatures will slowly moderate from the 20s on Thursday to the 30s by Friday into Saturday. A clipper system on Sunday could provide a few more showers with highs remaining in the 30s.
