Should Marco be banned for OTT and Satellite screening?

Published 1 week ago2 minute read

Malayalam Cinema Marco became a huge blockbuster upon release. The raw and brutal violence showcased in the film has been loved by many viewers. But now, CBFC has denied to certify the film for Satellite broadcast and even asked for an OTT ban from the government.

The movie has been deemed to be watchable in theatres by CBFC with an "A" certificate. So, with discretion the movie can be watched on OTT platforms as well by adults. Why suddenly, CBFC is pushing for a ban is incomprehensible. If the movie is too gore for audiences to watch, CBFC should have suggested cuts and recommended no theatrical distribution, too.

It seems like they wanted to open theatrical distribution but don't want it to be available on OTT platforms. Few movies cannot be given "U/A" for Satellite broadcasting and it is understandable. But why to restrict a film on OTT, that too after theatrical release?

Marco starring Unni Mukundan became such a popular blockbuster that people who love to watch gore and violence will find ways to download and watch it. Rather a restricted version of the film could be made easily available on OTT, if CBFC recommends cuts.

Now, several filmmakers are defending Marco and stating that CBFC is just a certification board and they can recommend but not dictate. Marco makers are contemplating about going to court against CBFC Chairman's recommendations for ban. We have to wait and see, how will this issue be resolved but once CBFC gives certification, it shouldn't be banned on OTT platform, at least.
