South African President Cyril Ramaphosa discussed bilateral relations with his Austrian counterpart, Alexander Van der Bellen, on subjects including clean energy, tourism, jobs, and cultural exchange.

Van der Bellen said Austria and South Africa are committed to building a brighter future, and political relations between the two countries are excellent.   Ramaphosa dwelt on the importance of trade and investment ties that Austria has with South Africa and how it can grow further for mutual benefit.

Praising South Africa, Van der Bellen said the country has set itself as a model for many nations transitioning into democracy from a dark and turbulent past.

Bilateral relations between Austria and South Africa can be described as very good. Austria is an economic partner with high technological expertise and a significant source of tourists. Austria is actively engaged in various sectors, including the economy, energy, culture, and scientific exchange.

 South Africa is Austria’s most important trading partner on the African continent. Around a third of Austria’s total exports to Africa are delivered to the country on the Cape. In 2024, Austrian imports from South Africa were   EUR 617 million, while goods and services worth EUR 661 million were exported to South Africa.

In previous years, there had been a trend of annual volume increases of 10-15%, attributable in particular to mechanical engineering products, vehicle components, and chemical products. Approximately 3,350 registered Austrians are living in South Africa.
