Rumored international Michigan State basketball target commits elsewhere
One roster spot is waiting to be filled with Michigan State basketball this offseason after losing Jase Richardson, Tre Holloman, Xavier Booker, Gehrig Normand, Jaden Akins, Frankie Fidler, and Szymon Zapala from a Big Ten championship team.
That's a lot of production and depth moving on, but the Spartans have already added Trey Fort and Kaleb Glenn from the transfer portal while also bringing in two players in the 2025 class.
Unfortunately, Tom Izzo has missed on a couple of guys so far this offseason for that final roster spot (that the Hall of Famer plans to use), headlined by five-star Darius Adams. That hurt, but Izzo immediately got back to work to locate more targets to fill that last spot.
Izzo was reported to be searching overseas for some help along with Divine Ugochukwu, a freshman guard from Miami who can play some backup point behind Jeremy Fears Jr.
In terms of international prospects, Izzo was rumored to be showing interest in point guard Noam Yaacov as well as 7-foot-2 big man Lewis Obiorah.
Unfortunately, one of them is now off the table.
Obiorah is considered a big man with a high ceiling but who is currently incredibly raw. He's a rim protector who could use some work on his offensive game and who might be slightly robotic right now, but he's only going to get better. The rumor was that he was being recruiting by Izzo to redshirt in 2025-26 to learn and improve, but this commitment to Texas wipes away that hope.
Michigan State is set in the post next season with Jaxon Kohler, Carson Cooper, and Jesse McCulloch all possessing the tools necessary to play center. Coen Carr, Kohler, and Cam Ward can all play the four.
The main need now is at the point guard spot, specifically the backup. Ugochukwu is the likely option, but fans are clamoring for Yaacov as other Big Ten teams continue to upgrade.
Heck, a Jase Richardson return would be nice, too (not happening).
