Rugby league-O'Brien's drop-goal secures win for Leigh after rare 0-0 stalemate at Wigan

Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards played out the first 0-0 stalemate in the Rugby League's 29-year history, before Gareth O'Brien's drop-goal secured a 1-0 golden point win for Leigh in extra time on Thursday.

The opening night of the Super League season saw both teams play out a physical, attritional game with neither side able to get a breakthrough, before Adam Keighran's dangerous tackle on Lachlan Lam earned Leigh a penalty.

O'Brien scored the drop-goal in the third minute of added time, securing Leigh's first win at defending champions Wigan since 1893.

"It's a bit surreal that we've won 1-0 but I'll take it," Leigh coach Adrian Lam told BBC Radio Manchester. REUTERS
