Revocation of appointments by President Mahama not good for Ghana's image - Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has condemned the government's directive to revoke the appointments of public service staff made after December 7, 2024.
Speaking to JoyNews about the incident, Afenyo-Markin stated that the revocation of public servants' appointments portrays a negative image of the country.
“These are Ghanaians who have been employed, who are being thrown out of employment onto the streets. We don't need it as a country. It is not good for the image of the country and it is creating some deep pain amongst people,” he said.
The Member of Parliament for Effutu further stated that many of those affected had followed the proper procedures to secure their employment well ahead of the elections, with some individuals receiving their appointment letters as early as September, only to have their appointments terminated.
He, however, criticised President Mahama for what he described as his hypocritical nature. He explained that when the president was in opposition, he criticised the former government and assured Ghanaians that he would not terminate their appointments. However, he has now acted contrary to those assurances.
“In 2017, when a matter of this nature arose, President Mahama tweeted to condemn that action and criticised the government of the day. In his campaign, he assured the youth that he wouldn't come and terminate anybody's appointment.
“For some of these appointments, the processes started way back and eventually, the appointment letters were issued some in September, October, some in November, some in December. I have seen letters that are terminating appointments that were made as far back as June last year, but we've raised it on the floor,” he indicated.
Afenyo-Markin stated that he has since called on President Mahama to rescind the directive to revoke appointments and to fulfill his campaign pledge of not terminating anyone's appointment.
Meanwhile, some officials of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have filed a lawsuit against the government over the termination of appointments.
