[hsinsider_post_social_share]
Frank Ocean is a fan favorite artist with a lasting impact on generations of music lovers.
“Blonde” by Frank Ocean was released Aug. 20, 2016 and was an album that would become so influential that it remains a fan favorite more than eight years later in 2025.
This was the second studio album of Christopher Francis Ocean, better known as Frank Ocean, who has been a ghostwriter for Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and John Legend and released his first studio album back in 2012. Many agree that the album “Blonde” is a work of art that truly impacted multiple generations of listeners. But what is it about this album that has allowed it to remain so relevant in pop culture, even after eight years? How come listeners worldwide, despite their age and background, still have songs from this album on the top of their playlists?
I thought that I was dreamin’ when you said you loved me
The start of nothin’
I had no chance to prepare, I couldn’t see you comin’
The start of nothin’
Ooh, I could hate you now
It’s quite alright to hate me now
But we both know that deep down
The feeling still deep down is good
With delicate and soft background music, “Ivy” is the perfect blend of sad yet romantic, conveying the emotions one faces after a relationship that has not gone well. Ocean describes the beauty of falling in love simultaneously blending in the pain of losing love. He effectively conveys the feeling of hope at the beginning of a relationship that almost feels dreamy, to the end of the relationship and realizing that what they had was essentially “nothing”, and weaves in the ups and downs that happens in between. Because of this universally relatable story, the song ”Ivy” truly can connect to everyone listening, whether it’s to seek comfort amidst a breakup or to reminisce about a time one has loved, or been loved.
I care for you still and I will forever
That was my part of the deal, honest
We got so familiar
Spending each day of the year, White Ferrari
Good times
In this life, life
In this life, life
This heartfelt song was written by Ocean about his relationship with his brother. Soft and slow paced, the lyrics symbolizes innocence and purity of this relationship, and how it feels taking these relationships for granted. In life, many of us feel nostalgia for our past relationships when we look back in retrospect. Even though time moves on and situations change, the love and care we have for the people in our lives still impacts us and who we are, which is the idea Ocean conveys with these lyrics as he states “I care for you still and I will forever”. These lyrics paired with the soft music feel intimate, expressing the connection that two people who are very close to each other would have.
I will always love you
How I do
Let go of a prayer for you
Just a sweet word
The table is prepared for you
Wishing you godspeed, glory
There will be mountains you won’t move
Although not as popular as “Ivy” or “White Ferrari”, this song is still one of the most beloved songs of true Frank Ocean fans. This song combines gospel elements giving a spiritual feel, paired with emotionally complex lyrics that touch the hearts of all listeners. Ocean conveys the feeling of wishing a former lover success on their new journey of life, and how his love will always continue. By saying “I will always love you” implies that his love continues forever. For all humans who want to wish each other well, despite what occurred previously in a relationship, this song conveys the message that love is uplifting and powerful. It teaches us that beyond a romantic relationship, there are still feelings of loyalty that we can have toward others.
From sweet lyrics to emotional themes of love, heartbreak, and relationships, Ocean has truly created a versatile album, relatable to everyone at any season of their life, especially teens. We have seen Frank Ocean’s album Blonde continue to become reintegrated into pop culture and stay relevant, especially among high school students.
Senior at Diamond Bar High School Nathan Pong stated that “When I listen to the album, I feel a sense of calm and nostalgia. All the moments from previous talking-stages and mistakes that happened helped me grow as a person”. Additionally, he believes Frank Ocean is also popular among his peers because “He has a special way of connecting to listeners, and his vocals are so good. The lyrics have meaning and aren’t random words like a lot of other artists.” Pong is not the only one to feel this way. Senior Jadealyn Nola states “When I listen to Frank Ocean, I feel a sense of comfort. His songs are like my comfort songs both when I’m happy or sad.”
Beyond being able to impact individual people and speak to their deepest feelings, “Blonde” has found unwavering success by the numbers, ranking fifth on Apple Music 100 Best Albums, and earning over 6 billion streams on Spotify, as of December 10th, 2024.
Ultimately, ”Blonde” by Frank Ocean remains a timeless masterpiece, who’s themes of love, loss, and nostalgia will resonate with the generations of listeners to come. “Blonde” is more than an album, it’s a work of art that will continue to be rediscovered and cherished, influencing the future of music in the years to come.
