As workers across the world commemorate May Day, the Minority Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has praised the resilience and sacrifices of Nigerian workers, while calling on the Federal Government to urgently address the country’s deepening economic crisis and ensure the payment of a living wage.

In a solidarity message released on Wednesday, the Caucus lauded workers for their critical role in sustaining national development amid rising hardship. The statement was signed by Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda; Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. Ali Isa J.C.; Deputy Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki; and Deputy Minority Whip, Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi.

“The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives felicitates with Nigerian workers for their critical role as a cornerstone of national growth and development,” the lawmakers said.

The group described Workers’ Day as an occasion for sober reflection on the state of the nation, adding that the Nigerian workforce has continued to deliver under dire circumstances.

According to the statement, galloping inflation, hunger, poverty, and economic hardship have taken a toll on workers, who have become the worst affected by the nation’s prolonged socio-economic and political instability.

“Equally troubling are the shrinking economy, rising insecurity, worsening job losses, and other indicators of underdevelopment — all of which hamper the performance and morale of the Nigerian workforce,” the statement added.

The Caucus urged the Federal Government to implement concrete measures to ease the burden on workers and rebuild confidence in governance. They called for improved remuneration, better welfare packages, and meaningful engagement with trade unions.

“There must be intentional efforts to not only address these economic challenges but also to improve remuneration, welfare packages, and incentives. Nigerian workers deserve a living wage — not just a minimum wage,” they stated.

The lawmakers also urged constructive collaboration between the government and labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other affiliated bodies.

While appealing to organised labour to demonstrate commitment and responsibility in its engagements, the Minority Caucus expressed optimism that genuine unity between all stakeholders could reposition the country on the path of sustainable progress.

“As a responsive and responsible group, the Minority Caucus believes that when all stakeholders work in unity, Nigeria can move from being a nation of untapped potential to one that fulfils its promise and assumes its rightful place in the global community,” the statement concluded.

The Caucus also extended its warm wishes to Nigerian workers, hoping for a peaceful and fulfilling Workers’ Day celebration.
