REPORT: Sydney's Agincourt Hotel Sold, All Live Music Cancelled

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

In disappointing but very-on-brand news for Sydney, another local venue appears to be turning its back on live music. The Agincourt Hotel on George Street has reportedly been sold off, and its new owners have decided to shut down the venue’s dedicated band room, ‘The Alley’, and axe all gigs going forward.

The news was shared online by alternative event party-starters Last Words, who’ve been running a regular emo, punk, and metal club night at the hotel since 2024. They broke the news on Instagram, writing: “The Agincourt Hotel / The Alley has been sold, and the new owners will not be featuring live music or entertainment in the venue at all moving forward, and they will not be honouring any existing bookings past mid June”.

Last Words then went on to voice their disappointment at the decision, writing: “Fuck the pokies and the investment groups that line their own pockets off of the misfortune of others and fuck those same people that are destroying live music in Sydney”.

Music Feeds has reached out to The Agincourt for comment.

Luckily, another iconic live music video has swooped in to save the day, offering Last Words a brand new home.

The alternative club night will now live on at historic Chippendale live music hub, The Lansdowne Hotel, which also happens to be in the midst of celebrating its 100th birthday with a huge series of celebratory gigs running across June.

In a press statement cheering the lifeline, Last Words founders Matt Raciti and Dan Harvey (B.A.D. Mgmt) said: “When we started Last Words, it was just two mates throwing a party we wished existed – loud, emotional, inclusive, and a little unhinged. We never imagined it would grow into the community it is now.”

They continued: “To be moving into a venue as iconic as The Lansdowne is surreal, and it’s only possible because of the people who’ve screamed, moshed, DJ’d, performed, and poured themselves into this night with us. We’re endlessly grateful to every artist, every punter, and everyone who’s ever believed in what we’re building. This isn’t just a party – it’s a scene, it’s a family, and it’s only getting louder.”

Despite originally flagging this Saturday, 7th June as the final ever Last Words party at The Agincourt, Last Words have now enthusiastically binned that plan. There’ll now be tumbleweeds at the ol’ Agi, with Saturday night’s festivities being officially relocated to The Lansdowne, to become the official launch party christening the event’s new home and new era.

The bash will feature live performances from Queensland’s Warbear plus local heavyweights Elara and Lotus Born, followed by DJs spinning punk, emo, metal, and party tracks late into the night. Punters can expect giveaways, drink specials and 50% off entry if you’re arriving for kick-ons after Short Stack’s gig at The Roundhouse.

The Last Words club night will then continue to run at The Lansdowne every Saturday night going forward, delivering live music, DJ sets, and a dedicated safe space for alternative music fans to celebrate.
