Report: AI Poses Bigger Threat to Women's Work

A recent UN report by the International Labour Organization indicates that women's jobs are more susceptible to transformation by artificial intelligence (AI) than men's jobs, particularly in high-income countries. The report, released on Tuesday, highlights that 9.6% of traditionally female jobs are poised to be transformed, compared to 3.5% of jobs typically held by men.

The increasing adoption of AI is expected to reshape administrative and clerical roles, including secretarial work, significantly. As AI takes on more administrative tasks, jobs in sectors such as media, software, and finance are also at the forefront of change due to the expanding learning capabilities of generative AI.

The report emphasizes that AI's impact is more likely to radically change job tasks rather than eliminate entire occupations. Human involvement will still be necessary for many tasks. The report stresses that the potential for a large share of current tasks to be performed using AI technology does not imply the immediate automation of an entire occupation.

The report calls upon governments, employers, and workers' organizations to consider how AI can be used to enhance productivity and improve job quality. It advocates for thoughtful implementation of AI to ensure that it serves to augment human capabilities rather than replace them entirely.
