Renewed clashes in Nkwanta South leave one dead, several injured - MyJoyOnline
Renewed ethnic tensions in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region have resulted in one confirmed fatality and several injuries, according to the Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Antwi.
The unrest erupted in the early hours of Thursday, 26 June, when an attempted libation ceremony sparked violent confrontations between rival groups.
Gunshots reportedly rang out around 2:00 a.m. as members of one ethnic group sought to perform traditional rites ahead of the Yam Festival.
The move was strongly opposed by a rival faction, reviving deep-seated tensions that local authorities had been working to quell.
The incident marks a serious setback following earlier agreements to suspend all public festivals due to the area’s delicate peace.
Speaking on Channel One TV, the MCE disclosed that two individuals were swiftly transported to hospital for treatment, but tragically, one succumbed to injuries later that day.
“We rushed them to the hospital, but this afternoon around 3 p.m., one passed, but the other is receiving treatment,” he stated.
Mr Antwi further revealed that two young women were also caught in the crossfire. While one was successfully hospitalised, the other remains unaccounted for.
“There are two young ladies who were also shot; one has been moved to the hospital, the other, we can’t find her. We do not know her whereabouts as I speak,” he said, expressing concern for the missing victim’s safety.
Efforts are now underway to stabilise the situation and locate the missing woman.
The Municipal Security Council is expected to convene an emergency meeting to chart a path forward and prevent further violence as tensions simmer in the area.
