More than 200 persons following the flood that ravaged three communities in Mokwa LGA on May 29.

The flood displaced 3,018 persons and destroyed three bridges in the communities.

In a statement on Monday, Chima Nwankwo, the NRCS coordinator of communications and advocacy, said the organisation has provided vital non-food items to 100 families in a bid to ease their suffering.

Nwankwo said each household received plastic buckets and jerry cans for safe water storage; mobile taps to support proper handwashing and hygiene; water purification tablets that kill harmful microorganisms in water; sleeping mats, blankets, and camp beds; and shelter kits containing essential tools and materials for building temporary shelters.

He quoted Abubakar Kende, the NRCS secretary general, as saying that the items are “essential for families trying to rebuild their lives after such a devastating event”.

“Clean water, proper hygiene, and shelter are not luxuries — they are lifesaving,” Kende added.

Nwankwo said the NRCS is working with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to ensure a coordinated response to the crisis.

He added that more distributions are scheduled in the coming days to reach more flood-hit communities.
