Modric’s departure from the Bernabeu after winning no fewer than six Champions League titles across 13 glory-filled years was announced last month, as the European club season wound down.
“The time has come. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end... On Saturday I will play my last game at the Santiago Bernabeu,” Modric wrote in a farewell letter.
“I arrived in 2012 with the illusion of wearing the shirt of the best team in the world and with the ambition to do great things, but I could not imagine what came next. Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I am proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history,” the Croat added, while also explaining that he will compete in the Club Word Cup which kicks off in the United States on June 14.
Madrid has a strong chance of heading all the way to the final on July 13 and also earning serious prize money in the meantime.
Regardless of how far Los Blancos go, though, Modric must find a new employer if he wishes to continue playing, while closing in on his 40th birthday.
That’s where AC Milan could come in according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, which has run a front page spread regarding the potential free transfer.
Elsewhere on X, formerly known as Twitter, Fabrizio Romano explained that “AC Milan new director Igli Tare dreams of bringing Luka Modric to the club”.
“He’s one of the names mentioned in initial internal talks. Modric received several approaches from clubs all over the world since leaving Real Madrid, [but is]
not in a rush to pick his next club,” the Italian added.
Thought of by many as Real Madrid’s greatest ever midfielder, Modric clearly has plenty of options to continue a storied career. Potential next destinations aren’t just in Europe, but also in the United States and Saudi Arabia.
