A drunken driver fatally mowed down a woman crossing the street in Lake Success, then fled the scene Friday night before being arrested, Nassau County police said.

Rajvir Singh Bharaj, 32, of North New Hyde Park, struck a pedestrian, Lidia M. Rivera, 61, around 10:30 p.m. in his 2024 Chevrolet Silverado traveling south near 430 Lakeville Rd., according to a charging document.

After striking the victim, Bharaj fled, and parked about a quarter mile from the crash scene, according to the charging document.

About 15 minutes after the crash, he returned on foot to the scene of the crash and admitted being the driver of the vehicle, which had damage consistent with having struck the victim, the charging document said. He had glassy eyes, his breath smelled of alcohol and he blew a 0.15% on a  blood-alcohol breath test, according to the document signed by Police Officer Jason Pahl.

The legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers in New York is 0.08%.

Police charged Bharaj with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash accident involving a death and driving while intoxicated.

Bharaj was arraigned and pleaded not guilty in Nassau County Court in Hempstead on Saturday, according to court records. He was held on $75,000 cash bail.

Bharaj's lawyer, John Salvatore Campo, of Garden City, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
