Pyramids FC of Egypt Wins CAF Champions League Title
Pyramids FC of Egypt were crowned African champions after a hard-fought victory over Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in the final of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League. The decisive match took place in Cairo, Egypt, on June 1, 2025, with Pyramids FC securing the title with a 3-2 aggregate win over two legs.
The final was marked by intense competition, with players from both teams showcasing their skills. Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena of Mamelodi Sundowns FC were active in the contest, while Walid El Karti and Ahmed Atef of Pyramids FC made significant contributions, with Atef notably involved in aerial duels and heading the ball. Following their triumph, the players of Pyramids FC celebrated their historic win on the pitch in Cairo.
This victory marked a significant milestone for the relatively unfancied Pyramids FC, as it was their second major trophy, following an Egyptian Cup success last season, and achieved in only their second campaign in the prestigious CAF Champions League. The club, which underwent a name change, relocated to Cairo, and earned promotion to the Egyptian top flight seven years ago, has made a remarkable ascent in African football.
Despite this continental success, Pyramids FC's Croatian coach, Krunoslav Jurcic, commented that the club still faces a considerable challenge in asserting themselves within their own country. He highlighted the ongoing struggle for domestic recognition and dominance even as they celebrated being crowned champions of Africa.
