PANAMA CITY, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Haiti's largest hydroelectric plant has reduced its output to zero after protesters occupied its facility, the state-run utility Electricite d'Haiti (EDH) said Thursday.
In a statement, the EDH condemned the occupation of the Peligre plant on Tuesday as "an atrocious act" that has triggered a total blackout in areas still dependent on the utility for electricity.
It urged authorities to investigate the incident, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure the facility's protection.
This is not the first time the hydroelectric plant has been forced to idle. In September 2024, it ceased operations due to protests over the distribution of scarce electricity. ■
