Expansion works on Kumasi Airport to be completed this year

The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has declared that the expansion of Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

According to him, the completion of the project will serve as an add-on to Ghana's drive to become an aviation hub in the West African sub-region.

He assured that the government will allocate resources to ensure the swift completion of the project.

The extension project includes the expansion of the runway at the airport to allow for the safe and direct landing of some international aircraft in Kumasi.

“The runway is a little short for some of the medium body aircraft. Currently, we have the runway space up to 1881 meters. We want to increase it to 2,320 meters," Nikpe was quoted in a myjoyonline.com article on June 12, 2025.

“The expansion (sic) will ensure that any flight from a long distance and the medium body aircraft is able to use the facility with ease. We are very hopeful that by the end of this year, the runway will have been completed and ready (sic) to be put to use," he emphasised.

The acting Director-General of the GCAA, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, also noted that ongoing projects at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) will soon be completed.

According to him, the government is putting measures in place to uplift the status of airports in Ghana as a business and air traffic centre in West Africa.
