Police demote sergeant, reprimand two others over alleged assault

The Imo   State Police Command has announced the demotion of Sergeant Anayo Ekezie to the rank of a corporal and reprimanded   two   other officers for assaulting a citizen along the Owerri-Aba Road.

Ekezie   and   the   two others namely Inspector Ofem   Obongha and Inspector Obinna Okereke, serving under the Safer High way  Unit were caught on a viral video assaulting a man along the road.

The spokesman of the command, Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement issued recently in Owerri

According to the statement, the command had conducted an orderly room trial and found Ekezie guilty of using his smoke gunner in assaulting the victim.

Okoye said that Inspectors Obongha and Okereke were severely reprimanded for failing to exercise proper supervisory control which allowed unprofessional conduct to occur.

Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said the Commissioner of Police, CP AbokiDanjuma had roundly condemned the officers’ action describing it as a breach of the Force’s Code of Conduct and human rights standards.

Danjuma reiterated the zero-tolerance policy for police misconduct and promised appropriate action for those found guilty.
