PIA pushed Nigeria's revenue to N50.88trn in 2024

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Directorate, has secured the conviction of five individuals for offenses bordering on cybercrime.

The convicts, Ayinla Abiodun Abdulmajid, Yusuf Abdulazeez Onimisi, Muhammed Zayad Eneye, Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen, and Victor Onucheyo Anibe, were prosecuted before the Federal and Kwara State High Courts in Ilorin.

Ayinla, Yusuf, and Muhammed were tried before Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court. Abdulbasit and Victor faced trial before Justices Sulaiman Akanbi and Haleema Saleeman of the Kwara State High Court, respectively.

Ayinla was found guilty of impersonating one Michael Cavezza through Google Hangouts to defraud a victim, Kirsty Reid, of $1,003. Yusuf also impersonated a fictitious character named Mikaylah on Telegram and obtained $300 from one Phillip Lee.

The cases were prosecuted by Innocent Mbachie, Sesan Ola, and Mustapha Kaigama. All the accused pleaded guilty.

Justice Awogboro sentenced Ayinla to nine months imprisonment without an option of fine.

He also ordered the forfeiture of $702, an iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Redmi phone, and an HP laptop to the Federal Government.

Yusuf was sentenced to three months imprisonment without an option of fine.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of $300 and a Samsung S31 phone.

Muhammed was sentenced to 400 hours of community service, with his HP laptop forfeited to the Federal Government.

In a similar judgment, Justice Akanbi sentenced Abdulbasit to two years imprisonment with an option of N400,000 fine. The court further ordered him to sweep the premises of the Kwara State High Court for two months. The sum of $145 and an iPhone 11 were also forfeited.

Justice Saleeman sentenced Victor to two years imprisonment with an option of N600,000 fine.

He was also ordered to forfeit N4 million, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a Samsung phone to the Federal Government.
