Peter Obi Issues Warning Against Get-Rich-Quick Mentality
Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian youths to shun the rising get-rich-quick mentality and instead focus on hard work, acquiring skills, and pursuing entrepreneurship as reliable routes to lasting success.
Obi made the appeal on Friday at the maiden edition of the Amatutu Community Entrepreneurship and Empowerment Summit held in Agulu, his hometown in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Speaking at the event, Obi decried the societal damage caused by the desperation among some young Nigerians to acquire wealth through illegitimate means.
“In 1957, my father owned three Mercedes-Benz cars among other properties. Today, none of those properties exist. I do not believe in acquiring wealth all over the world that is not for your immediate need — what for? If people understand life in a simple manner, the urge to get rich by all means will not exist, and life will be more meaningful to all,” he said.
He encouraged youths to channel their energy into entrepreneurial ventures, trade, and productive skills, noting that these are more enduring and meaningful routes to personal and national development.
The summit, organised by the Director of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home in Agulu, Ms. Aisha Edward-Maduagwu, featured the empowerment of 50 beneficiaries — including women and young people — with cash, equipment, and tools to support their small businesses.
Obi commended the organisers for their efforts and pledged continued support for initiatives that uplift the underprivileged, widows, and budding entrepreneurs.
Also speaking at the event, Prof. Chinyere Okunna, who was the Special Guest Speaker, urged the organisers not to relent in their mission to transform rural communities and promote positive values.
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu, stressed the importance of innovation and community collaboration in driving inclusive progress.
In her remarks, Edward-Maduagwu described the event as a milestone in Agulu’s pursuit of inclusive development. “This event is a testament to the power of visionary leadership and commitment to human capital development,” she said.
Some of the beneficiaries also expressed gratitude. Mrs. Chidiebele Iloanya, a petty trader, pledged to make good use of the support received. Similarly, Mr. Ifeanyi Okonkwo, who was empowered with funds and equipment for his saloon business, thanked the organisers for what he called a life-changing opportunity.
