'Pelican Pounds' now redeemable at participating Ocean Springs stores - Gulf Coast Weekend

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) - The Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce has started its annual incentive to shop local.

It’s called the Pelican Pound, where shoppers can go to the Chamber’s office to pick up a token worth five dollars for free.

That token— or Pelican Pound— can then be redeemed at any participating local business for five dollars off a purchase.

Ocean Springs Chamber Main Street President and CEO Cynthia Sutton says this is funded through the Chamber’s many local events.

“It is a five-dollar wooden coin that you can use at participating businesses in town. Right now, we have more than two dozen participating businesses that accept the Pelican Pound,” Sutton said. “It’s one per person, per purchase, and we reimburse those businesses, so it’s no extra cost to the locals or tourists. It’s just a fun incentive to get people out and moving during the summertime in Ocean Springs.”
