PDP Demands Urgent Action By Governor Alia After Herders Kill 20 In Benue

Published 3 weeks ago2 minute read

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has strongly criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia over his administration’s perceived failure to curb the ongoing wave of violent attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

This comes in the wake of renewed violence in Aondona, Tse Orbiam, Ahume, and several other communities within Gwer-West and Guma Local Government Areas.

The coordinated assaults reportedly left over 20 people dead and destroyed properties valued in millions.

In a statement issued on Monday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, the PDP expressed frustration with the governor’s silence and inaction in the face of persistent bloodshed.

“We demand from the governor, as the Chief Security Officer, an immediate intervention and comprehensive measures to be put in place to protect Benue communities from the rampaging herdsmen,” the statement read.

The party accused Governor Alia of prioritizing frivolities over security, referencing a dinner he hosted for entertainers while the Aondona community was under attack.

“This sadly demonstrates his lackadaisical attitude towards the plight of the Benue people whom he swore an oath to protect,” the statement added.

PDP also called on President Bola Tinubu to step in, stating that Governor Alia has proven “inefficient, nonchalant, and compromising” in his handling of security issues.

The party further lamented that the governor had yet to publicly condemn the killings nearly 24 hours after the incident, saying it conveys an unmistakable impression of a Chief Security Officer who has abandoned his primary responsibility.

They also offered condolences to families of the victims and prayed for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
