Paige Bueckers Shines in Dallas Wings' Victory Over Sun; WNBA Makes Announcement

The Dallas Wings secured their second consecutive victory, defeating the Connecticut Sun 86-83 in a tightly contested WNBA matchup on Friday night. The game featured an intense battle with 12 lead changes and 10 ties, demonstrating the back-and-forth nature of the contest.
Rookie star Paige Bueckers was the pivotal force behind the Dallas Wings' success. She delivered a phenomenal performance, contributing 21 points, 7 assists, and 2 rebounds, along with 2 steals. Despite being held to just 36% shooting in the second half, her strong first-half showing and overall composure were crucial in sealing the win for Dallas, improving their season record to 3–11. Post-game, the WNBA hailed Bueckers as the top performer, noting it was her fourth 20+ point game and second straight '20-piece'. This feat makes her and Aziaha James the only rookies this season to record a 15-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist game, with Bueckers achieving it three times.
Bueckers also made headlines by receiving the first technical foul of her WNBA career late in the second quarter. After a baseline jumper, she clapped towards the official, Charles Watson, calling out “And one!” The referee flagged her for unsportsmanlike conduct, which Bueckers later acknowledged, stating, "I clapped twice and I said ‘And one!’ And he said I clapped in his face. So, that's all."
Beyond Bueckers, other key players contributed significantly to the Wings' victory. Fellow rookie Aziaha James scored all of her season-high 17 points in the second half, including a crucial floater with 26 seconds left in the third quarter that gave Dallas the lead for good after a 62-62 tie. NaLyssa Smith added 12 points, and Li Yueru contributed 11 points and a season-high 9 rebounds. In the final minutes, Arike Ogunbowale hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws, followed by DiJonai Carrington's layup, extending the Wings' lead to 83-76 with 45.8 seconds remaining.
Despite shooting only 36% (11 of 31) from the field in the second half, the Wings capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, converting 21 of 26 attempts (81%). In contrast, the Sun, who are now on a five-game losing streak and hold a 2-11 record, made 12 of 15 free throws. This win marks the first time the Dallas Wings have achieved back-to-back victories this season, having previously snapped a seven-game skid with an 80-71 win over Golden State and earlier beating Connecticut 109-87 on May 27 for their first win of the season.
The game also marked Paige Bueckers' second return to Connecticut, a state that holds special significance for her due to her collegiate alliance with the UConn Huskies basketball team. Post-game, she expressed her fondness for returning, saying, "It's fun coming back here every single time. They've always shown so much love to me, and it's been a state that's done a lot for me. And so it's always amazing to come back and to get another win here, continue to keep building on what we've been doing as a team, and keep striving for better." The Dallas Wings are set to play their next game on Sunday, June 22, at Washington.
