A total of 5,465 face-to-face household interviews were conducted using a stratified random sampling method, targeting citizens aged 15 and above.

More than half of Nigerians would relocate abroad with their families if given the opportunity, according to the Africa Polling Institute's (API) 2025 Social Cohesion Survey.

A total of 5,465 face-to-face household interviews were conducted using a stratified random sampling method, targeting citizens aged 15 and above.

The interviews were carried out in five major languages—English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba—with geographic quotas assigned to ensure proportional representation across all states and senatorial districts.

According to the report, 53% of respondents indicated their willingness to emigrate with their family members, citing disillusionment with the current state of the nation and declining economic prospects.

The survey also showed that 59% of Nigerians feel "extremely or somewhat dissatisfied" with their lives as citizens of the country, contributing to the growing national frustration over poverty, insecurity, and a lack of opportunities.

The survey stated, “Almost 6 in 10 citizens (61%) believe that the level of corruption has increased significantly in the past year, while 64% assessed the government’s efforts at tackling corruption ‘Poorly.’”

On the ‘Gender Equity’ Indicator, 7 in 10 Nigerians (71%) agree that women should be allowed to lead in politics, corporate entities and religious organisations. Also, 73% agree that women should be given equal entitlement to family inheritances.

Another 73% believe that women who marry into another state should be allowed to have equal opportunities in their husband’s state. Also, 39% rated the government’s effort at promoting gender equity as “Poor”; as against about a third (33%) who rated the government “Fair”, and 28% who rated them positively.

Furthermore, 63% said they would vote for a woman as President of Nigeria, 69% would vote for a woman as state governor, and 76% would vote for a woman as local government chairperson.

It stated, “Regarding self-worth, 59% of Nigerians feel “Extremely or Somewhat Dissatisfied” about their lives as Nigerians right now; while 53% would consider relocating abroad with family members if offered the opportunity.

“Also, 56% of citizens believe that the future of the country would be much better than it is presently; compared to 26% who expressed pessimism that the future would be much worse.”

API described this as a concerning indicator of low national morale and called for urgent socioeconomic reforms to give Nigerians renewed hope and confidence in their homeland.
