Manipur is grappling with severe flash floods affecting over 56,000 people, triggered by overflowing rivers and breached embankments

NEW DELHI: Over 56,000 people have been affected by flash floods in Manipur following the overflow of rivers and breaches in embankments, officials said on Tuesday. The floods have damaged 10,477 houses, with 2,913 people evacuated from the worst-hit areas, mainly in Imphal East district. One person went missing after being swept away by a river in Imphal East on Monday. A new embankment breach occurred at Bashikhong after the Kongba river overflowed on Monday, causing severe flooding in parts of Imphal city and Imphal East. As many as 57 relief camps have been set up to assist displaced residents.The Manipur Fire Service, along with personnel from the Assam Rifles, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been actively engaged in evacuating stranded residents from submerged localities

In addition, 93 landslides have been reported across the state over the past five days, worsening the situation. Low-lying localities in Imphal, including Khurai, Heingang and Checkon, remain submerged due to the rising water levels.
