ForbesNYT ‘Connections’ Today: Hints And Answers For Tuesday, May 20

It’s Wednesday. and you know what that means: it’s time for another round of Connections!

While my partner and I were out to dinner at a Southern BBQ place the other day, my mind turned to the best bite of food I’ve ever had. On one of our first trips together, my previous partner and I went to San Sebastián in the Basque country.

One evening, we visited a bunch of pinxto bars (a pintxo is a small bite, similar to tapas). At a bar called A Fuego Negro, I tried a piece of pork with, I believe, a lemon mousse. This melted in my mouth in seconds. It was unforgettable.

I have wanted to go back to San Sebastián ever since. Alas, that bar is closed now. That bite will just have to live on in my memory. Enjoy good things while they last, folks.

Before we begin, we have a great little community on Discord, where we chat about NYT Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. Everyone who has joined has been lovely. It’s a fun hangout spot, and you’re more than welcome to hang out with us.

Discord is also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare (or not-so-rare) occasions that I mess something up. I don’t look at the comments or Twitter much. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Wednesday, May 21 are coming right up.

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT’s website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed.

Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my hints via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

Just after the hints for each of today’s Connections groups, I’ll reveal what the groups are without immediately telling you which words go into them.

TRASH and REFUSE could have fit together, but nope, not this time. I realized pretty quickly that REFUSE went with the rest of the yellows.

A quick, semi-relevant story: Me and my mostly underage friends went to a club one time. The only one of us who was ID’d was the only one who was of legal age. He didn't have his ID with him and was refused entry. The rest of us went in. A jerk move, to be sure, but hey, it was a fun night.

Anyway, a red herring caught me out after that. DESKTOP, TABLET, LAPTOP and (I figured it was the only other word that made sense) COMPACT were not close to a group.

It didn’t take me long to understand that COMPACT did go with LAPTOP, albeit with CLAM and WAFFLE IRON as their partners. That took care of the purples.

TABLET was the word that stuck out to me. Since it likely wasn't a type of computer, it was probably medication (and not the sweet snack from Scotland). That helped me figure out the blues.

That left the greens, which I guessed were folders on a computer, not specifically a Mac. Close enough!

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Thursday’s game if you need them.

P.S. I’ve mentioned punk music a few times over the last few days, so it feels fitting to share this as a recommendation. Eleven days ago, Turnstile – arguably the planet’s most popular hardcore punk band – played a hometown show in a Baltimore park. It was free to all and estimated attendance was over 10,000.

A full video of the show that was posted on the band’s official channel popped up in my YouTube recommendations. I was utterly transfixed as I watched the whole thing. It’s fun that it was filmed what looks like an old-school video or digital film camera.

As one video recapping the event stated, “it was organized chaos in the best way possible.” That’s my favorite kind of energy. The sense of community spirit here is absolutely palpable. It takes less than a minute for the stage dives to start and they don’t really stop for the entire show.

This is a band that’s soon going to headline a major festival in Ottawa, a couple hours’ drive away from me. It’s rad to see them play a big free show like this for their local fans, many of whom will have been with them on their entire journey.

Best of all, this was a benefit show. Turnstile used it to raise funds for Health Care for the Homeless, a charity that helps people experiencing homelessness:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Call someone you love!
