NYSportsJournalism.com - Nike Tops Adidas In NBA Finals

Published 1 week ago2 minute read

The highly anticipated NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder will feature what is expected to be all-star play from the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

But while a lot of attention beginning Tuesday night will be focused on the action above the rim, footwear companies Nike and adidas will be engaging in their own battle literally on the court.

Nike had a commanding lead with 21 of the 27 players who played for Miami and OKC in the Eastern and Western Conference Finals, respectively, wearing basketball shoes from Nike or a Nike division.

And with these same players expected to be on the rosters for the NBA Finals, that means nine players from Miami and eight from Oklahoma City will be wearing Nike brand, two Heat players and a third from the Thunder will be wearing shoes from Nike division Jordan Brand and yet another will have shoes from Nike's Converse unit.

In fact, among the starters and bench players on Miami, only Shane Battier with China-based Peak hoops shoes and Mario Chalmers with Spalding basketball kicks are non-Nike-related endorsers. No player on the Heat wears adidas.

Four members of the Thunder wear adidas, including five-time NBA champion Derrick Fisher. But the team's top three scorers — Durant, Westbrook and Harden — are all Nike endorsers. James and Durant each have signature shoes.

Adidas is expected to run TV spots for its adiZero line during the Finals. James, Durant and Wade should get starring roles in commercials for Nike and Jordan Brand, respectively.

Adidas, of course, scores points for being the official jersey outfitter for the NBA. Nike can't touch its rival there.
