LeBron James has done a lot of things during his basketball career, but he has never been on the cover of a video game. Until now.
2K Sports has unveiled its cover for NBA 2K14, and James is front and center. The four-time NBA MVP also appears in marketing to support the product and was involved in the development of the game.
2K has released two spots to support the game. In one, James re-enacts his "announcement" from a few years ago when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat. Here, though, the announcement is about his cover and the "King James Bonus Pack." "2K is letting me do things the LeBron way, starting with the 'King James Bonus Pack' . . . which, of course, I highly recommend you check out. This is going to be the best sports video game the world has ever seen. Get ready."
NBA 2K14 is scheduled for release Oct. 1. The "King James Bonus Pack," which includes exclusive content with James, added play modes and keys to unlock hidden features.
2K said that its NBA 23K13 release — with Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose on the cover — is "setting records for virtual goods sales” and is the company’s third consecutive basketball game to top sales of 5 million copies.
According to James, "I love partnerships and opportunities that connect me directly with fans. I know from my own experience and now watching my own kids, NBA 2K is among the coolest and purest ways for fans to connect to the NBA. I love being a part of it.”
