Nvidia Expresses Concerns to US Lawmakers About Huawei's AI advancements

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang discussed concerns about Huawei Technologies’ growing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with US lawmakers. According to a senior congressional committee staff source, the issues were raised during a closed-door meeting between Nvidia executives and the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee. The discussion included Huawei’s AI chips and how restrictions on Nvidia’s chips in China could enhance the competitiveness of Huawei’s chips.

The senior staff source indicated the risk of creating global market demand for Huawei chips if models like DeepSeek-R1 were trained on Huawei chips or future open-source Chinese models were highly optimized for them. Nvidia spokesman John Rizzo stated that Jensen met with the House Foreign Affairs Committee to discuss the strategic importance of AI as national infrastructure and the need to invest in US manufacturing. He reaffirmed Nvidia’s full support for the government’s efforts to promote American technology and interests globally.

Nvidia’s chips, crucial for developing chatbots, image generators, and other AI systems, have been subject to US export controls since the Trump administration. Nvidia has adapted by designing chips for the Chinese market that comply with evolving regulations. However, last month, the company reported being asked by the Trump administration to halt sales of its latest China offering, the H20 chip. Chinese customers had been increasing orders for these chips, driven by low-cost AI models such as those from DeepSeek.
