NPP Warns Election Rerun Sets "Chaos Precedent" in Ghana
Mustapha argued the move—pending for seven months before sudden reversal—rewards violence and undermines Ghana’s democratic integrity.
“If this stands, every future election will descend into chaos. Losing sides will simply destroy materials to force reruns,” he stated, alleging the EC is “teaching a new method of rigging.” The NPP insists only three stations required resolution, citing EC boss Dr. Bossman Asare’s earlier parliamentary testimony. Mustapha emphasized that courts alone hold legal authority to order reruns, referencing the 2008 Akwatia case where judicial intervention mandated revotes.
The controversy centers on whether the EC overstepped by nullifying results without judicial review. Mustapha warned the precedent could incentivize attacks on polling stations, knowing disruptions may trigger administrative do-overs. The NPP has rejected participation in any rerun, setting the stage for potential legal challenges.
