NPA CEO Condemns Suspended Chief Justice's Public Remarks as Illegal | News Ghana
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on June 28, the legal practitioner asserted that her public disclosure of petition details undermines judicial integrity during an active constitutional process.
“What does she seek to achieve by putting the details of the petition in public?” Tameklo questioned, echoing criticism from NDC communications member Hamza Suhuyini. The latter contended Torkornoo breached legal decorum, stating: “The people pay to ensure she benefits from judicial privileges. The least she can do is respect our laws.”
The condemnations follow Torkornoo’s unprecedented decision to publicly defend herself against removal petitions. Critics argue the Chief Justice violated principles of discretion and neutrality required for the office, while supporters view it as necessary transparency. The controversy compounds existing tensions around her impeachment process, which opposition NPP figures previously claimed appeared politically motivated.
No formal response has been issued by the judiciary or presidency regarding the allegations of procedural violation. Legal observers note Article 146 impeachment proceedings typically mandate confidentiality until concluded.
