Now, Spain Follows France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and Netherlands in Implementing New Travel Rules for UK Passport Holders: What Updates You Need to Know

Ahead of the summer travel season, Spain recently made some significant changes to entry requirements for UK nationals after some other countries, such as France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and Netherlands. Such measures are aimed at enhancing frontier security and easier circulation within the Schengen Area. Failure to comply with such new requirements would see denial of boarding or denial of entry on arrival.

UK travelers must ensure their passports meet specific validity criteria:

It’s crucial to check passport expiry dates well in advance to avoid travel disruptions. Renewal processing times can take up to three weeks, and expedited services are available at a higher cost.

From mid-2025, UK nationals will need to obtain an ETIAS visa waiver before traveling to Spain and other Schengen countries. This online application process involves a €7 fee for adults aged 18 to 70 and is valid for three years or until passport expiration, whichever comes first.

Starting in October 2025, Spain will implement the EES, an automated system that records biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) upon entry and exit. This system replaces traditional passport stamping and aims to enhance border security and efficiency.

In a bid to combat organized crime and enhance security, Spain now requires travelers to provide additional personal information when checking into accommodations or renting vehicles. This includes details such as payment information, which will be shared with Spanish authorities. Non-compliance could result in fines up to €30,000.

Travelers may be asked to demonstrate sufficient financial means for their stay. As of 2025, the minimum required amount is €118 per person per day. For stays of 9 days or more, proof of at least €1,065 is necessary.

UK passport holders will continue to undergo manual passport stamping at Spanish borders until at least October 2025. Despite agreements for e-gate access, full implementation is expected to be phased over several months, potentially extending into 2026.

Between June 27 and July 5, 2025, Spain reintroduced temporary border checks at all land, most air, and some sea borders in Seville for the Fourth United Nations International Conference on Financing for Development. Travelers should anticipate potential delays during this period.

While not explicitly required, it is strongly recommended that UK travelers obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering health, accidents, and potential trip cancellations. This ensures protection against unforeseen circumstances during your stay in Spain.

As part of the updated travel rules, UK citizens should also consider the Health Insurance Card requirement. While the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is valid in Spain, it is advisable to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. The GHIC only covers basic healthcare and does not include repatriation, which could be critical in emergencies. Make sure your insurance also covers COVID-19-related incidents, even though travel restrictions for the pandemic are generally relaxed.

Furthermore, Spain is increasing its focus on sustainable tourism. In cities like Barcelona and Madrid, there are now environmental taxes in place, which tourists may need to pay upon arrival at certain accommodations. These fees help fund the preservation of Spain’s iconic landmarks and help mitigate the effects of overtourism. It’s important to check local regulations regarding these taxes as they can vary by region.

If you’re a UK passport holder and intend to travel to Spain in 2025, it’s crucial to remain updated on these fresh travel requirements. Verifying passport validity, procuring adequate ETIAS approval, and adhering to increased data collection procedures are crucial measures to prevent traveling disruptions.
